Virtually every digital camera comes with everything you need to start taking pictures right out of the box. As with most hobbies, however, a few well-chosen accessories can help you to get the most from your digital camera.

Digital cameras are battery hogs. If your camera uses AA batteries, and you're using the camera's LCD display, flash, and zoom, you can deplete a set of alkaline batteries in 30 minutes. If your camera uses AA batteries and the manufacturer hasn't included rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger with your camera, we strongly recommend that you get a set. The NiMH batteries last longer on a single charge than alkalines do, and they can be recharged hundreds of times. Batteries Review.

Manufacturers almost always cut costs by shipping cameras with small-capacity memory cards. Picking up a bigger card has two advantages: you can shoot more pictures before you have to transfer images to your computer, or you can take pictures at higher quality. Memory Card Review.

Virtually all digital cameras include a cable that connects your camera to your computer for image transfers, so a dedicated card reader isn't a necessity. However, not every cable is compatible with every computer, and some cables transfer data much more quickly than others. For example, many newer cameras include a USB cable, which is compatible with iMacs and most PCs, but doesn't work if you're using Windows NT or have an older PC without a USB port. Even if you do have the correct cable for your computer, you need to connect and disconnect the cable every time you transfer files, and you often need to use the camera manufacturer's software to transfer the images.
Dedicated card readers make transferring files as easy as using a floppy disk. Simply pop the memory card out of your camera and into the reader, and the card will appear on the desktop as another drive. Whether you're using a desktop or laptop, Mac or PC, we have a reader that will work for you. See all Memory Card Readers.

A carrying case provides a nice way to both protect your camera and keep all of your accessories (spare memory card, extra batteries, etc.) organized. Whether you're looking for a small carrying pouch just large enough for the camera or a jumbo "gadget bag" big enough for all of your gear, we're sure to have something that fits your needs.
