The C-3040 Zoom isn't cheap, but if you can get over the
sticker shock, you'll get a lot for the money.

I
have been searching for a camera like this for a long time. The
picture quality is almost too good. It even captures imperfections in
skin, etc. I had one small problem with the Camedia software
connecting to the camera via usb. After doing a newsgroup search I
found the answer was not to click on the camera, but to go through the
"virtual cd" created when it is connected. After finding
this out, there was really no reason to use the included software. You
can simply use explorer to copy the photos from the "virtual cd"
to another folder. I can honestly say that I have never been happier
with a camera. This product is amazing!!!!!!!

The
superlatives have already been provided and they are justified. A
feature that is not mentioned is the ease of use and excellence of the
bundled Camedia image managing software. (I said managing and not
editing.) One of the really useful features is the ability to stitch
3D panorama movie files which allow the viewer to subsequently, with a
mouse, scan a scene a complete 360 degrees horizontally, and about 90
degrees vertically, depending on the amount of zoom applied to the
original image. For scenery, these images are spectacular. However,
there is no camera that can, for example, reconstruct scenes that are
experienced skiing among the peaks above the snow line or in viewing
the fall colours in the Adirondack mountains. This comes incredibly
close. Note Bene: To use this feature you must use the Olympus Smart
Media cards. Olympus puts their proprietary software to stitch these
images into 3D panorama images only on their brand of Smart Media
card. Only 2D stitching is possible with other cards. The cost of the
Olympus cards seems compatible with the others. I requirement I was
not aware of when I purchased two 128 MB cards. The 11 x 17 inch photo
prints produced on my Microtec Photo Ex printer are incredible. There
is an imperceptible difference between images produced at this
enlargement when they are saved as 3.4 megapixel TIFF files or the
high quality JPEG files that require 25% of the memory. The great
sinks, ventilation and temperature controls in my darkroom are now
only used for fermentation of my wine. In life we sometimes make good
choices. For me, this was one of them.

The Lowest Price is not always best !
When you buy a digital camera, the basic package almost always includes
extras such as a battery charger, lens cap, batteries, flash memory card, and software.
One of the more disreputable practices a dealer can engage in is called unbundling. These
dealers remove items from the package that are normally included in the price and
price them separately.
When purchasing
a camera you have three components of the price to consider - the camera price, postage and
handling, and taxes. Many dealers lower the price to make the camera more attractive, then
increase the postage and handling to boost their profits.
Hesitate before
accepting extended warranties. Every knowledgeable consumer expert says it's better to
gamble. Most of a company's profit is in the sale of these warranties so they press, and
press hard. Your job is to resist, and resist hard. The only thing to keep in mind is that
digital cameras can be horribly expensive to repair. If you want peace of mind, you may
want the warranty, even though it's probably overpriced. The cost of a repair can
approach, or even exceed, the original purchase price.
When you buy a
camera from a reputable dealer, you expect to be able to return it if you aren't
satisfied. Some dealers try to discourage this by requiring a restocking fee for returned
merchandise. This is always explained as a way to recover their costs of checking the
merchandise and restoring the packaging you may have opened.
Many dealers is
truly a false, deceptive and a total crook. Bait and switch tactics used. Does not sell
new merchandise and will ship used or refurbished goods without notifying customer. They then
try to charge a restock fee on top of their exobitant shipping fees to make a profit where
they could not on their goods. A try case of buyer beware.
